We are Stacks
A team of engineers, physicists, and passionate believers in data, mathematics, and machine learning. We build data-driven solutions for hard problems in business and law.

Our mission
To provide business intelligence and actionable insights to IP owners and other stakeholders using data and the latest advances in analytics.
What we do
We dig and label stacks of data coming from host places such as external APIs, public libraries, court websites, internal databases, search engines, etc.
The labeled data is used for training models that can determine the contextual, linguistic, and technological similarities between different inputs.
Our trained models become the main engine for legal and patent research tools available as Stacks API. Law firms, corporate legal departments, and financial institutions can use Stacks API to address legal authority issues, patent eligibility, and infringement risks.
Our Team

Behnam Kia (Co-Founder & CEO)
Behnam Kia received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Arizona State University in 2011. In his Ph.D. thesis, he studied complex systems theory and showed how nonlinear models and systems can be flexible and tunable, and how they can be trained and adjusted to implement different tasks. During his career as a research faculty at North Carolina State University and the University of Hawaii, he designed and fabricated multiple generations of flexible, trainable software and hardware systems that could implement different, desired tasks in software and hardware. He has 25 peer-reviewed published research papers, and 3 published U.S. patents.
As a response to the growing demand for AI education for all students, Behnam designed and taught the very well-received "Applied Artificial Intelligence" course at North Carolina State University. Interdisciplinary work, crossing the boundaries of fields and carrying a body of knowledge from one branch to another are all hallmarks of Behnam's research and teaching work. For example, Behnam's research covers topics from modeling nonlinear behaviors of stars to genes' dynamics and integrated circuit design as function approximators. In his class, he taught AI to students from 10 different departments and helped them apply this new branch of science to the problems in their fields.
Today, Behnam has focused on law and court system as a complex system and has been trying to model its behavior in order to help the lawyers to understand how the court behaves in a more efficient and consistent way, which ultimately aims to strategize their cases.

Alireza Behtash (Co-Founder & CTO)
Alireza Behtash received his Ph.D. in physics from North Carolina State University in 2019, following his Bachelor of Science in physics from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. His research focused on the mathematical aspects of quantum mechanics, quantum field theories, and nonlinear dynamics from the perspective of dynamical systems. With more than 15 published papers and over 700 citations, Ali has contributed significantly to understanding path integrals using Morse theory and its complex variants.
Since completing his Ph.D., Alireza has been applying his deep mathematical background to build cutting-edge machine learning and AI solutions. His expertise in nonlinear dynamics and graph theory has proven invaluable in developing Stacks' core technology. He leverages discrete Morse theory and other advanced mathematical concepts to uncover hidden patterns in complex datasets, particularly in the legal and patent domains. His work has been instrumental in creating powerful predictive tools that bridge the gap between mathematics and practical AI applications.
